Two very different January 2024 matches
Durban's Super Giants made 225/3 here on 13 January 2024 and won by 35 runs. Nine days later, Pretoria Capitals were all out for 52, with Sunrisers Eastern Cape winning by nine wickets. These are the highest and lowest first-innings totals in the eligible sample. Both belong to 2023/24, so simply selecting one season does not remove the variation between matches.
Why the median helps in this sample
The four eligible first innings in 2023/24 averaged 152.8, while their median was 167. Pretoria Capitals' 52 is part of that calculation: being all out after 13.3 overs makes it a completed innings. Across all four seasons the mean and median are much closer, at 160 and 158.5. Looking at both measures shows how an unusual total can influence a small group.
Chasing results differ from season to season
Teams batting second won nine of 20 eligible decided matches overall, or 45%. In 2024/25 they won one of six; in 2025/26 they won three of five. The later percentage is higher, but it represents only two more successful chases in a different set of fixtures. The result counts give a clearer sense of scale than the percentages alone.
